Senator John Arthur Smith, the Chair of both the Finance & Revenue Stabilization and Tax Policy Committees, introduced SB 235 yesterday. The bill calls for a $2 million cap per project on the film incentive rebates. This would apply to all future TV/Theatrical productions shooting in the state. If passed, this would clearly injure the NM film industry.
Helping with Film & Media Day is now more important than ever. It looks like this bill will be heard on Friday, February 5 at 1:30 p.m. and we’ll be rallying the troops prior to the reading of the bill.

On September 18, 2009 Screen Actors Guild announced the election results for the New Mexico Branch Elections.
Current Council Members at Large Karen Cotter, Cliff Gravel, Marilyn Morgan and Donna Trone, along with National Director Roy Costley welcome the following newly elected candidates to the New Mexico Branch:
William Sterchi / President / two-year term
Dan Strakal / Vice President / two-year term
Paul Blott / Secretary / two-year term
Robyn Reede / Treasurer / two-year term
The next two weeks are crucial in our campaign for passage of the Employee Free Choice Act. In this time it’s important that we have as much contact with Senator Bingaman as possible and let him hear from the people of New Mexico. He’s getting plenty of phone calls from the other side. The clamor he hears during the important discussions going on needs to be from us, not from our opposition.
It’s turning out to be quite an important year for Screen Actors Guild members on the legislative front. The 2009 regular session at the Roundhouse – which finished on March 21 – saw Right-to-Work-for-Less legislation, as well as a bill to kill the New Mexico film incentive program. Due to our collective efforts, both bills have been tabled.
